The film, directed by Lynne Ramsay and adapted from Ariana Harwicz’s novel, follows a new mother’s mental health decline in isolated Montana. Lawrence’s relationship with the film deepened over time. She was pregnant with her second child during production and faced postpartum depression while also serving as a producer. Reflecting on this, she said,
“That was a ride.”
She found the process of promoting the film “very personal and weird,” given how closely the themes resonate with her own experiences.
