British actress Aimee Lou Wood has publicly criticized fellow The White Lotus star Sydney Sweeney after Sweeney addressed the controversy around her participation in an American Eagle campaign accused of racist undertones.
The campaign ran with the slogan ‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’, which sparked backlash for implying genetic superiority. The criticism highlighted that the undertones of the advertisement were interpreted by some as promoting eugenics.
The issue gained wider attention when photographer Misan Harriman, known for shooting celebrities such as Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Rihanna, and Tom Cruise, shared a clip from a recent GQ interview with Sydney Sweeney. In the interview, Sydney appeared to dismiss concerns about the campaign.
“Presuming that you are not a white supremacist, at least say how horrified you were by how this campaign was amplified and celebrated by unrepentant racists who believe in eugenics,” Harriman wrote on Instagram.
“At least recognise the harm your jeans campaign has caused black folk. The undertone of the campaign is that your genetics are superior to others – the play on words is clear as day and racists LOVED it! So, presuming you didn’t know when you shot it, you certainly do now, and it matters.”
Aimee Lou Wood's critique highlights the broader conversation about racial sensitivity and accountability in advertising, urging celebrities to acknowledge the impact of the campaigns they endorse.
