David Lammy, standing in for Sir Keir Starmer at Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) for the first time, forgot to wear a poppy during the session held just before Remembrance Sunday.
Halfway through the session, Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, handed Lammy a poppy to pin on his lapel. Lammy explained that he had forgotten to attach the poppy to his new suit, which he had bought specifically for his appearance at the despatch box that day.
He told the House of Commons,
“I bought a new suit this morning because my godmother said she would be watching.”He also added,
“I am very grateful to the honourable member for Sunderland South for ensuring that, despite wearing a new suit, I have managed to put my poppy on.”
Kevin Hollinrake, Conservative Party chairman, criticized Lammy on X, stating,
“A disgrace that David Lammy, the Deputy Prime Minister of this nation and standing in for the Prime Minister at PMQs, is not wearing a poppy.”
A spokesperson for the Prime Minister highlighted that Lammy had opened PMQs with a tribute to veterans and those who fell, emphasizing the importance of the occasion. They said,
“The Deputy Prime Minister, all ministers and the Prime Minister salute the fallen and those who have served our country both in the past and present and that commitment is clear.”
Lammy concluded with a reminder of the significance of the weekend, saying,
“This weekend is Remembrance Sunday. We will never forget those who fought to defend our freedom.”
This marked Lammy’s first PMQs as Deputy Prime Minister, after succeeding Angela Rayner.
