Alix Wilton Regan, known for her roles as Samantha Traynor in Mass Effect and the Inquisitor in Dragon Age, commends BioWare for its inclusive character portrayal. BioWare RPGs are renowned for their rich cast of companions who play a central role in the storytelling across titles like KOTOR, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect.
Wilton Regan's experience highlights the diversity within these games. She began as Ser Cauthrien in Dragon Age: Origins and later portrayed Samantha Traynor in Mass Effect 3, recognized as the first openly lesbian crewmate in the series. Additionally, she provided voices for the Inquisitor in Dragon Age: Inquisition and its expansion, The Veilguard.
During the launch event for True Indie Voice Art, Wilton Regan shared her admiration for BioWare’s approach to representation in storytelling.
"I think what BioWare did was truly groundbreaking in terms of storytelling. Not just even storytelling in games, but actually storytelling, full stop," says Wilton Regan. "Having a femshep to match the maleshep. Having a lesbian character that is just a lesbian and can't go with Mark Meer's character [Male Shepard], can only go with Jen [Hale's] character [Female Shepard]. Putting their flag in the ground for LGBTQIA+ representation."
Wilton Regan emphasizes how BioWare set a new standard by including characters whose identities are respected without being defined solely by their relationships or gender, reinforcing the studio's commitment to authentic representation.
Author’s summary: Alix Wilton Regan applauds BioWare for pioneering genuine diversity and LGBTQIA+ representation in RPG storytelling through compelling, inclusive characters.
