Bonfire night is exciting for people but can be extremely stressful for dogs. The loud explosions and fireworks can cause anxiety, with some dogs becoming fearful and seeking comfort from their owners. In fact, the noise can last for weeks, prolonging the distress for many pets.
Signs of fear in dogs include pacing and panting, while cats may hide or hiss. Awareness of these behaviors helps owners respond appropriately to their pets' stress.
“Common signs of fear include pacing and panting in dogs, and hiding and hissing in cats,” says Dr Samantha Butler-Davies, Vet for Pets at Home.
Prepare a quiet, safe space for your dog well before bonfire night. Use calming aids such as sprays or plug-ins to reduce anxiety. Essential oils like lavender, ginger, vanilla, and valerian may provide soothing effects when used sparingly in a diffuser.
“Introduce dogs to a comforting safe space in advance of bonfire night,” says Dr Butler-Davies. “And make sure you have calming sprays or plug-ins available.”
Providing bedding with your scent nearby can encourage pets to relax in a secure spot. Activities that focus your dog's attention, such as chewing a frozen Kong filled with peanut butter, can also trigger calming endorphins.
“Dogs often need something to focus on,” says Kate Margolis, animal welfare expert at PetProov.com. “Chewing a frozen Kong filled with peanut butter releases calming endorphins.”
Creating a safe environment, using calming aids, and providing comforting distractions help soothe pets during stressful firework displays, improving their well-being.
