As Halloween nears, many prepare for the holiday with costumes and sweet treats. Among the spooky entertainment options, viewers can now include the new Stephen King-based series It: Welcome to Derry in their horror lineups.
The HBO show, directed by Andy Muschietti, serves as a spin-off of the films It and It: Chapter Two, which Muschietti also directed. It explores the deeper history of Derry, a town haunted by a deadly shapeshifter that preys on children's fears.
The shapeshifter is best known as Pennywise the clown, portrayed again by Bill Skarsgård.
Muschietti began developing the series in March 2022 with his wife Barbara and screenwriter Jason Fuchs. The show draws from the interludes in Stephen King’s novel, gradually leading up to the Black Spot event—where an African American airmen speakeasy is destroyed by fire on the Derry air base.
The story is set in 1962, 27 years before the 2017 events in It. This period reflects Cold War tensions and racial divisions, which heighten the community’s paranoia.
The first episode successfully establishes a chilling atmosphere and builds anticipation for the unfolding horror.
By Luis Zonenberg: "As Halloween approaches, more people are gearing up for the holiday season with their spooky costumes and sugary sweet goodies."
It: Welcome to Derry enriches the original story by delving into previously untold details about the town and its sinister presence.
Author's Summary: The new series deepens the chilling mythology of Derry, skillfully blending historical tension with horror to engage viewers from the start.
