A fresh, yet-to-be-finalized agreement is set to introduce a leadership rotation between Rabbi Doron Perez and the current World Zionist Organization (WZO) head, Yaakov Hagoel. This deal follows the collapse of a previous arrangement triggered by a contentious appointment.
On Wednesday night, a deal concerning key Zionist institutions' appointments unraveled dramatically. The disruption was largely due to the unexpected nomination of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s eldest son, Yair Netanyahu, for a comfortable board position within the WZO.
This appointment "crossed a red line for many" and caused the opposition Yesh Atid party to withdraw its support from the agreement.
The fallout threw the World Zionist Congress into confusion and derailed the earlier compromise.
The emerging deal excludes Yair Netanyahu from any WZO position. The role he was nominated for—leadership of the WZO’s Diaspora and Information Department—had included significant perks such as an office, car, and a salary equal to that of a government minister.
It remains unclear who will assume this prominent role in the WZO.
The new leadership agreement aims to restore stability to the WZO by reinstating Yaakov Hagoel and removing controversial appointments, thus addressing political tensions caused by previous nominations.
"Yair Netanyahu will not receive any position in the WZO," the latest reports confirm.
Author's summary: The new WZO deal resolves recent controversies by excluding political figures like Yair Netanyahu and proposing a leadership rotation to rebuild trust.
