The flu season has started earlier than usual in the UK this year, with the NHS reporting a significant early wave. Cases are currently three times higher compared to the same period last year.
According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), flu cases rose from 6.1% to 8.2% this week, mainly driven by an increase among school-aged children. This is a notable rise from 2.9% at this time last year.
This early upsurge raises concerns about the flu spreading further into the population, possibly resulting in a prolonged flu season.
Dr. Bhavini Shah, an online GP at LloydsPharmacy, emphasizes the importance of early vaccination.
"Flu season typically begins in the autumn and peaks between December and February, so getting vaccinated early gives your body time to build immunity before the virus starts circulating widely."
"It takes around two weeks for the vaccine to provide full protection."
Dr. Shah warns of the risks for those eligible who delay getting their flu jab.
