Florida’s 7-foot-9 Olivier Rioux made his much-anticipated debut against North Florida, becoming the tallest player in college basketball history. The game ended with the Gators winning 104–64 at the O’Connell Center in Gainesville.
With just over two minutes left and UF leading 102–61, the crowd of more than 10,000 fans began chanting his name, eager to see the world’s tallest teenager finally take the court. Head coach Todd Golden answered their calls and substituted Rioux into the game.
“It felt great,” said the 19-year-old Canadian. “The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful.”
Although he neither scored nor grabbed a rebound, Rioux still made history by surpassing 7-foot-7 Kenny George, who played for UNC Asheville from 2006 to 2008, as the tallest person ever to appear in a college basketball game.
“It’s another day, I guess,” Rioux said. He has become a popular figure on campus, often approached by students for pictures, autographs, and casual conversations.
His teammates were thrilled for him, especially his friend Micah Handlogten, who stands at 7-foot-1 and admits feeling small next to Rioux.
“So much fun,” Handlogten shared. “When he was checking into the game, I kind of stopped him and I was like, ‘Play with confidence.’”
