The White House is set to reveal on Thursday that an additional nation will establish diplomatic relations with Israel through the Abraham Accords, according to Steve Witkoff, President Donald Trump’s special envoy.
"I'm flying back to Washington tonight because we're going to announce, tonight, another country coming into the Abraham Accords," Witkoff said at the America Business Forum in Miami.
During Trump's first presidential term, the Abraham Accords led to several Arab countries normalizing ties with Israel in 2020.
These agreements have also contributed to the diminishing influence of the Palestinians by undermining the long-held Arab consensus that recognition of Israel should occur only in exchange for concessions within the peace process.
Palestinians, who continue to endure Israeli occupation, perceive the accords as a betrayal by Arab states that had committed to supporting Palestinian independence and urging Israel to withdraw from territories occupied since 1948.
"The deal is seen as a stab in the back by Arab countries who vowed to support Palestinian independence and press on Tel Aviv to withdraw from post-1948 lands."
The upcoming announcement will add another nation to the Abraham Accords, marking a further shift in Middle East diplomatic relations and impacting the Palestinian position significantly.
Author's summary: The White House will announce a new country joining the Abraham Accords, deepening regional normalization with Israel and further isolating the Palestinians politically.
