The Roadrunners, one of the newest FBS programs, mark their 15th season in 2025. UTSA began its football program in 2010 with a practice year and played its first season as an FCS Independent in 2011. The team then joined the Western Athletic Conference in 2012 before moving to Conference USA in 2013. Starting in 2014, UTSA became a full FBS member.
UTSA set NCAA modern startup records in 2011, attracting 56,743 fans to their inaugural game against Northeastern State and averaging 35,521 fans across six home games that season.
The Roadrunners made history by opening the 2021 season with a road win over Illinois from the Big Ten Conference. They won their first conference championship by defeating WKU 49-42 and finished the year with a 12-2 record and a bowl game appearance.
UTSA successfully defended their Conference USA title in 2022 with a 48-27 win over North Texas, achieving their third consecutive bowl game and an 11-3 season record.
