Craig Berube on David Kampf Stepping Away from the Marlies

Before Monday’s game against Pittsburgh, coach Craig Berube discussed several lineup and roster updates, including the Cowan–Tavares–Nylander line, Chris Tanev’s health status, David Kampf’s decision to step away from the Marlies, Bobby McMann’s irregular participation in morning practice, and Sammy Blais’ strong start in his first two games with the Maple Leafs.

David Kampf’s Situation

Berube: “I didn’t see frustration in camp. He came in ready, but there was tough competition. We have a lot of players, and difficult decisions had to be made. He didn’t want to be in the minors, so that’s his choice. That’s something for him and Brad (Treliving) to work out. I don’t have much more to add on that.”

Cowan–Tavares–Nylander Line Evaluation

Berube: “Cowan handled the puck really well. He moved through the neutral zone effectively and created plays offensively. He and JT seemed to read each other well and generated good scoring chances.”

Author’s summary: Berube praised Cowan’s chemistry with Tavares and Nylander, while confirming that Kampf’s decision to leave the Marlies was his own choice amid strong competition.
