What’s behind Riley Moss drawing so many penalties? The Denver Broncos’ starting cornerback has faced criticism, but teammate Patrick Surtain II came to his defense with humor and support.
Moss and Surtain are both dedicated students of the game, constantly analyzing opponents and refining their craft. Despite frequently being targeted by opposing quarterbacks due to lining up opposite Surtain, Moss has successfully defended more than half of the passes thrown his way.
Though Moss has been flagged at a higher rate than most, Surtain stepped up for his fellow cornerback with a lighthearted remark during the Closed On Sundays podcast alongside co-host Terrion Arnold.
“I think they're racial profiling my dog, though, man,” Surtain said with a grin. “They're calling all these flags on my boy, man. I ain't going to lie; the flags is egregious.”
The comment was clearly playful, referencing the rarity of white cornerbacks in the modern NFL. Alongside Moss, Cooper DeJean—another former Iowa player—also represents this uncommon demographic. When the Broncos drafted Moss, much discussion arose about the “white corner” topic, prompting head coach Sean Payton to address comparisons to former New York Giants cornerback Jason Seahorn multiple times in 2023.
Patrick Surtain II playfully defended teammate Riley Moss, turning the scrutiny over Moss’s frequent penalties into a humorous take on NFL stereotypes.
