A suspicious package at Joint Base Andrews near Washington caused several individuals to fall ill, prompting an evacuation and ongoing investigation.
The base administration confirmed that the evacuation occurred after someone opened a suspicious package. As a precaution, both the affected building and an adjacent one were evacuated, and a perimeter was established around the site.
“First responders from Joint Base Andrews were dispatched to the scene, an assessment found no immediate threats, and the site was handed over to the Office of Special Investigations. The investigation continues.”
The package contained an unknown white powder, which was sent to the Malcolm Grove Medical Center. Those exposed received medical treatment, according to sources close to the inquiry.
An initial field test by the HAZMAT team found no dangerous substances, but the investigation remains open. The HAZMAT team departed the scene Thursday evening.
The exact number of people affected and the severity of their symptoms are not currently known. The room where the package was opened, located in the Air National Guard Readiness Center building, remains closed.
