A suspicious package containing an unknown white powder was delivered to Joint Base Andrews, a US military base in Maryland. After the package was opened, several people fell ill, and some were hospitalized, CNN reported.
A building on the base was evacuated as a precaution following the incident. According to a statement from Joint Base Andrews, the affected building and an adjacent one were cleared, and security cordons were established around the area.
“As a precaution, the building and connecting building were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area.”
Several individuals were taken to the Malcolm Grow Medical Center located on the base. The severity of their conditions has not been disclosed.
Joint Base Andrews first responders found no immediate danger and handed the investigation over to the Office of Special Investigations. An initial hazmat field test showed no hazardous substances, but the inquiry is still ongoing.

Joint Base Andrews is widely known as the home of Air Force One, the airplane used to transport the President of the United States.
Authorities continue to investigate the content and intent of the package.
