The National Health Service (NHS) has issued an urgent warning as flu cases rise sharply across the UK. Health officials are urging everyone eligible to get vaccinated as soon as possible to help prevent a serious wave of infections this winter.
According to estimates from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), flu-related deaths in England reached 7,757 last winter, compared to 3,555 the year before. The number of flu-related child deaths also increased from 34 to 53.
“There is no doubt this winter will be one of the toughest our staff have ever faced,” said Sir Jim Mackey, NHS chief executive, referring to both flu pressures and upcoming doctor strikes.
Pharmacist Claire Nevinson from Boots emphasized the importance of vaccination, noting that it’s one of the most effective ways to protect oneself and help reduce virus spread.
“Getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to protect yourself against flu and help reduce the spread of the virus,” said Claire Nevinson.
She advised people eligible for free NHS flu jabs to book their appointments promptly. For those not eligible, vaccines are available as paid services in pharmacies. At Boots, the cost is £21.95, and similar services are available at Superdrug, Tesco, and Well Pharmacy.
The NHS has issued an urgent flu alert as cases rise, urging vaccinations to prevent a severe winter crisis amid rising death numbers and ongoing healthcare pressures.
