Police in Stockport are investigating a fire that occurred near the Marple war memorial just days before Remembrance Sunday. The incident happened around 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday, 5 November, when emergency services were alerted to reports of a group of males near the Cenotaph.
A bin and several wooden pallets had been set on fire, causing damage to the nearby ground. Officers from the Marple neighbourhood team are appealing for any information that could help identify those responsible.
The news has sparked strong condemnation across social media and within the local community. Local councillor Steve Gribbon expressed his outrage on Facebook.
"This is an absolutely disgraceful act and will not be tolerated," wrote Councillor Steve Gribbon.
Police Sergeant Rachel Walton of Stockport East Neighbourhood Policing Team commented on the seriousness of the incident.
"This was a reckless act that could have ended with more damage and even serious injury. Police units arrived on scene within minutes and the fire was quickly extinguished by colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service," she said.
Authorities are now coordinating with Stockport Council and the fire service to ensure the memorial area is cleaned and restored to its proper state.
The community condemned a small arson near Marple’s war memorial ahead of Remembrance Sunday, with police calling it a reckless and dangerous act.
