Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater reunited for their ninth collaboration with the film Blue Moon. Fans are also curious about the possibility of a sequel to The Black Phone, in which Ethan Hawke returns from the dead.
The horror sequel had a strong opening weekend, grossing $26.5 million at the box office. Hawke enjoys working in genre films and expressed enthusiasm about continuing the series.
“I would like to go to hell with the Grabber. That would be my dream for the third one, to let it be a character piece about what made him, who he is now, and how he’s haunting other people’s dreams.” — Ethan Hawke, Entertainment Weekly
Despite enthusiasm for The Black Phone series, Hawke is skeptical about adding another film to the Before trilogy with Julie Delpy and director Richard Linklater. It has been 12 years since the last film, Before Midnight.
“The answer I usually give is that the three films feel complete. The first one begins with us on a train listening to a couple in their mid-40s fighting, and in the third one, we’ve become that couple. The circle feels complete.” — Ethan Hawke, Variety
He added that if another collaboration happens, it might not be part of the Before series, but rather something new, possibly titled the After series. The special aspect of those films was the creative harmony between Julie, Rick, and himself, which might be rekindled someday.
“It could be something new — maybe the After series. But part of what made those movies special is that Julie, Rick, and I were always in sync about what we wanted to say. That could happen again one day — it might start with one phone call or an email.” — Ethan Hawke, Variety
Ethan Hawke is excited about continuing The Black Phone series but sees the Before trilogy as complete, leaving room for a fresh new project with Linklater and Julie Delpy in the future.
