Resetting Afghanistan ties is a geopolitical need, however, the Gandhis are showing their diplomatic ignorance.

India has two hostile neighbours in the immediate vicinity and one in the greater region, making it imperative to forge alliances for stability.

Afghan foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi is on his maiden visit to India, as the Taliban-led government, which came to power after the US withdrawal from Kabul in 2021, is yet to receive recognition from world powers.

Historically, India enjoyed good relations with Afghanistan, but had to close its High Commission in Kabul in 2021, and later opened a small mission to facilitate medical support, trade, and humanitarian help.

There is a dilemma regarding which flag to use during official talks, as India officially recognizes the old flag of Afghanistan, not the current Taliban flag.

After four years of diplomatic strain, the relationship between Afghanistan and India appears to be approaching a much-needed thaw.
