Sir Anthony Hopkins shared a heartfelt message to his estranged daughter, Abigail, in his newly released memoir, We Did OK, Kid. The 87-year-old actor expressed his hope that she knows his "door is always open" to her.
“I hope my daughter knows that my door is always open to her. I want her to be well and happy.”
Hopkins reflected on memories from Abigail's early years:
“Until the day I die, I will never forget the sight of her in that crib, laughing up at me when I walked in the room the first year of her life, sleeping soundly the night I left.”
He expressed lasting regret for leaving the family, though he believed at the time he had no alternative.
Hopkins shares Abigail with his first wife, Petronella Barker, whom he was married to from 1966 to 1972. In his memoir, he detailed their difficult marriage, complicated by his struggles with alcohol, and his decision to leave.
During his sobriety journey, Hopkins sought to make amends and apologized to both Barker and Abigail. He recalled a meeting in London in 1997 when Abigail was nine years old:
“We put up a good front, but obviously so much damage had been done. They didn’t want me there. Throughout the meal, they kept catching each other’s eye and making faces.”
The actor also mentioned that Abigail stayed with him occasionally as a teenager.
Summary: Anthony Hopkins openly expresses remorse and hopes for reconciliation with his estranged daughter Abigail, sharing personal reflections in his memoir while acknowledging past family struggles.
