AFLW: Chelsea Biddell Reflects on 75 Games as Crows Aim for Finals
Adelaide defender Chelsea Biddell will reach a significant milestone this Sunday, playing her 75th AFLW game in the Crows' elimination final against St Kilda. At 27 years old, Biddell has grown into a leadership role both on and off the field, embracing the responsibilities that come with experience.
Emerging as a Leader
Biddell spoke about her development in leadership, which did not come easily at first. This season marked her debut in the Crows’ leadership group, an achievement she values highly.
“That was pretty special to be announced as part of the leadership group this year, especially to be voted in by your peers, it’s very nice,” Biddell said.
She described leadership as a skill she has steadily worked to improve, especially after becoming a regular player.
“(Leadership) has been something I’ve been working on over the years, when I started to get games consistently, it was then being able to bring others along with me. I had to work really hard on that part of my game, especially when I started to become one of the more experienced players.”
Although not naturally loud on the field, Biddell focused on strengthening her communication and presence.
“It’s definitely been challenging. In terms of on the field, I’m not really the loudest person, so I think it was just (developing) that voice and communication that I really had to build on.”
Career Journey
Despite becoming a key part of the Crows’ defense, Biddell’s path to 75 games involved overcoming obstacles. Initially drafted as a forward in the 2019 AFLW Draft, she struggled to secure a consistent spot in a strong team lineup and often moved in and out of the side.
Her switch from forward to defender in 2022 marked a turning point in her career, leading to greater stability and success on the field.
