November 7, 2025 - SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom officially declared November 2025 as “Native American Heritage Month.” This announcement arrives just before the Governor’s trip to the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) in Brazil, which will see the largest Indigenous presence in the event's history, focusing on Indigenous peoples as key “guardians of biodiversity.”
California honors the Native American communities who are the original inhabitants of the land, as well as those from across the nation who now live in the state. Despite being forced to relocate here through federal policies in the past, these communities have shown resilience, resistance, and growth.
“As Californians navigate federal policies impacting our communities, families, and core values, we shine a light on the first people of this nation,” said Governor Newsom.
The Newsom Administration partners with Native American tribes through initiatives that promote truth, healing, and nature-based solutions aimed at community and environmental wellbeing.
Governor Newsom’s declaration highlights California’s commitment to recognizing Native American heritage, resilience, and leadership, especially amid federal policy challenges affecting Indigenous communities.
