A young, underweight dog was discovered by the NYPD in Brooklyn, tied up with multiple untreated wounds on her legs and neck. With urgent care from the ASPCA, she eventually found a loving home.
In January 2025, the NYPD rescued a medically compromised dog, later named Seal. She was first taken to the Queens Animal Care Center, then to the Veterinary Emergency Group for urgent treatment before being transferred to the ASPCA Animal Hospital (AAH).
The ASPCA veterinarians found that Seal weighed only 38 pounds, with her vertebral and pelvic bones clearly visible. She suffered multiple penetrating wounds on her neck, ears, and all four legs, consistent with dog bite injuries.
"Seal also had extensive skin loss and exposed muscle tissue on both back legs, near the ankles."
Seal required extensive wound management and a carefully monitored refeeding plan to safely regain weight, as rapid gain could cause additional health issues.
Once stable, Seal was transferred to the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center (ARC) to continue her healing and rehabilitation process.
"Malnourished and underweight dogs like Seal require a carefully measured diet so that they don’t gain weight too quickly, which can cause further distress."
