FX’s The Lowdown, created by Sterlin Harjo, co-creator of Reservation Dogs, concludes its first season this week. This “Tulsa noir” series captivates viewers with sharp, funny dialogue and a diverse supporting cast, including Tulsa natives like Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tracy Letts, and Tim Blake Nelson. It also features the final film appearance of iconic actor Graham Greene.
Ethan Hawke stars as Lee Raybon, a writer and bookstore owner who refers to himself as a “truthstorian.” Lee’s character combines good intentions with flawed decisions, often landing in trouble and bluffing his way out, sometimes unsuccessfully. For example, when Lee is kidnapped by skinheads despite being armed, Killer Mike’s character questions,
“How does an adult with a gun get put in a trunk?”
Lee is a relentless investigator whose blend of chaotic but insightful behavior is unique on-screen.
Lee Raybon is based on Lee Roy Chapman, a real Tulsa writer, journalist, and historian who passed away in 2015 at the age of 46. This connection adds depth to the character and the show’s narrative.
Through Ethan Hawke’s portrayal of a complex investigator inspired by a real journalist, The Lowdown offers a fresh and compelling take on Tulsa’s stories.
Author’s note: Ethan Hawke's Lee Raybon blends determination and flawed humanity, bringing a real Tulsa figure's spirit to life in FX's gripping series.
