NV Energy is under scrutiny for allegedly overcharging customers by an estimated $65.5 million over 23 years. An ongoing investigation has expanded the review period, uncovering widespread billing errors dating back to 2001, according to the Nevada Public Utilities Commission and KTNV reports.
The initial investigation focused on an eight-year span of overcharges but has since revealed problems spanning two decades. NV Energy admitted to misclassifying homes in their billing system, resulting in inaccurate charges to many customers. Originally, the company estimated approximately 60,000 customers were affected with about $17 million overcharged; however, a later audit increased this count by 20,000 additional impacted customers, as reported by FOX5 Vegas.
The Nevada Public Utilities Commission is currently deciding how the company should reimburse those impacted by the overcharges. Customers, including Southern Nevada homeowner Gariety Pruitt, voiced frustration over the refunds. Pruitt stated,
“They owe everyone that they overcharged with interest.”
She had only received a partial refund after years of overpayment, reflecting the dissatisfaction of many involved.
NV Energy’s long-standing billing errors have led to tens of millions in overcharges, prompting regulatory review and calls for full reimbursements with interest from affected customers.
