Utah Valley University (UVU) is enhancing its police and security presence following the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk on campus on September 10.
A UVU spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the university is hiring eight new police officers and two additional security managers to improve oversight and support at campus events.
The university faced heavy criticism after the fatal shooting for its apparent lack of adequate security measures. Campus police had previously raised concerns about being understaffed for the university’s population of 46,000 students.
“University police officers play a vital role in maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment by enforcing local, state, and federal laws while upholding the university’s values of respect, integrity, and inclusion,” said Ellen Treanor, UVU’s associate vice president of strategic communications.
“Officers protect students, employees, visitors, and property, and take a proactive approach to crime prevention, education, and community engagement.”
Only six officers were present on campus when the tragic incident occurred, highlighting prior concerns about understaffing.
Summary: Utah Valley University is responding to the assassination of Charlie Kirk by significantly expanding its police force after criticism regarding inadequate campus security.
