Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan in Michoacan, was fatally shot during Day of the Dead celebrations in front of many witnesses. Known for his strong stand against organized crime, Manzo was hit seven times and later died in hospital.
Following the killing, President Claudia Sheinbaum convened an emergency meeting with her Security Cabinet to address the escalation of violence. Mexico's security chief, Omar Garcia Harfuch, promised that those responsible would not evade justice.
Manzo’s widow, Grecia Quiroz Garcia, together with local residents, has called for accountability and justice for the murder, as the weapon used has been connected to organized crime groups by authorities.
"No impunity will be allowed," stated Omar Garcia Harfuch, Mexico's security chief.
His assassination shocked the community during a cultural event meant for remembrance and reflection, highlighting the ongoing challenges Mexico faces with cartel violence.
The murder of Uruapan’s anti-cartel mayor during a public festival underscores the urgent need for stronger protection of officials opposing organized crime in Mexico.
