Jay Som is the musical project of Melina Duterte, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. She will release her new album Belong on November 7. Ahead of the album launch, Jay Som shared the track “Past Lives” featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore.
The artists met in Nashville to collaborate on the song, alongside Steph Marziano. Williams’ gentle harmonies in “Past Lives” emphasize the song's wistful mood, conveying moments of drifting in and out of emotional lows, with glimpses of momentum that eventually fade away.
The track is intense, with a subdued middle section that feels like an internal struggle. Duterte reflects on the collaboration:
“It’s a dream come true to have Hayley sing on my first feature on an album; before recording ‘Float,’ I still can’t believe it happened.”
“She’s one of the kindest artists out there and she graciously accepts and uplifts the people around her. We’re all so lucky to witness her talent and live on the same timeline as her.”
The album Belong also features contributions from Joao Gonzalez (Soft Glas), Mal Hauser (Mk.gee, Illuminati Hotties), Steph Marziano (producer for Vundabar, Hot Wax, Sir Chloe), and Kyle Pulley. For the first time, Duterte invited guest vocalists to appear on her record.
