Since joining the Chicago Bulls just before last season's trade deadline, Kevin Huerter has been a plus/minus standout. At 27 and on his third team in five years, he believes he has finally found a home in Chicago as he enters his prime.
Huerter leads the Bulls in plus/minus since being acquired in a three-team deal that sent Zach LaVine to the Kings at the February trade deadline. His positive impact goes beyond statistics.
Despite head coach Billy Donovan's positive remarks about Huerter, his future with the Bulls is unclear. Huerter becomes a free agent after this season, and with multiple expiring contracts on the roster—such as Coby White and Nikola Vucevic—the team must weigh business decisions carefully.
“I just want to be a part of winning basketball at this point of my career,” Huerter said. “Whether fans have liked it or not, Billy has preached that since I got here. Even when that [LaVine] trade happened, he was like, ‘I know who left the building. Are we going to be a team that folds, or are we going to try and make a push to the playoffs, get a little taste of that?’ The energy since I’ve gotten here hasn’t been, ‘Hey, we’re looking to take a step back.’”
Huerter understands the business side of the sport but remains focused on competing for a playoff spot with the Bulls.
Author's Summary: Kevin Huerter, a key player since his trade to the Bulls, hopes to secure his future in Chicago as he pursues a winning team environment amid roster uncertainties.
