Amazon has agreed to pay $1.5 billion in refunds following a lawsuit filed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The company was accused of misleading customers during Prime enrollment and making account cancellations unnecessarily complex.
Amazon settled a lawsuit with the Federal Trade Commission over deceptive enrollment and cancellation practices, including enrolling customers in Prime without their consent and making it difficult to cancel.
The settlement will compensate certain U.S. subscribers who signed up for Amazon Prime between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025. Eligible participants must have joined the service through one of the FTC‑challenged enrollment paths or unsuccessfully attempted to cancel their subscription during that same period.
If you joined Amazon Prime outside of these dates or through a different sign-up method, you will not be included in the distribution. Most eligible members will receive their refunds automatically without additional steps.
The FTC settlement requires Amazon to return $1.5 billion to customers affected by misleading Prime sign-ups and obstruction in cancellations between 2019 and 2025.
