The Cook Islands have qualified for their fourth Rugby League World Cup by delivering a dominant 58-6 victory over South Africa at CommBank Stadium. Led by Warriors star Marata Niukore, who scored twice, the Pacific nation showcased superior skill against the Rhinos.
Despite fielding no NRL players and only a handful from State Cup, South Africa initially kept pace, leading 6-4 early in the game. However, a strong run by prop Davvy Moale, breaking through three defenders to make it 10-6, marked the turning point and diminished South Africa’s hopes of reaching their first World Cup since 2000.
Just before halftime, Esan Marsters and Marata Niukore scored tries within minutes of each other, increasing the Cook Islands' lead.
The second half was a showcase of the Cook Islands’ superiority. Five-eighth Cassius Cowley scored two tries, while Niukore completed his double with a well-timed run.
“Brendan Piakura produced the try of the game when he split two defenders on halfway and stepped South Africa's fullback to score.”
Cronulla star KL Iro also impressed, finishing a 60-metre effort initiated by Rua Ngatikaura’s offload and Cowley’s break into space.
With this emphatic win, Cook Islands are celebrating their fourth appearance at the Rugby League World Cup, securing the final tournament spot with confidence.
