With LSU’s offense struggling, quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was benched during the game against Alabama in favor of sophomore Michael Van Buren. This marked the second consecutive game where Nussmeier was replaced late by Van Buren.
Van Buren, who transferred from Mississippi State earlier this year, entered the game as a relief quarterback. Before being pulled, Nussmeier had completed 18 of 21 passes for 121 yards, averaging 5.8 yards per attempt.
At the time of the substitution, LSU trailed Alabama 17–6. The decision reflects ongoing efforts by the coaching staff to revive the team's offensive performance.
“It’s the second straight game Nussmeier has been sat down toward the end for Van Buren,” reported The Reveille.
