The new Toyota Hilux has been officially unveiled, retaining its proven platform but now boasting modern styling, an improved interior, and even an electric version. After several leaks and a short teaser phase, the 9th-generation Hilux made its global debut in Thailand, marking a decade since the previous model’s launch.
This model holds special importance for South Africa. The Hilux, first introduced locally in 1969, has remained the country’s top-selling vehicle for over fifty years. It continues to be built at Toyota South Africa Motors’ Prospecton plant in KwaZulu-Natal.
Despite its fresh looks, the new Hilux maintains the outgoing generation’s IMV platform. Toyota added hydraulic engine mounts and shear-type cabin mounts designed to minimize vibrations and improve ride comfort.
“Reduce vibrations and enhance ride comfort.”
Several body elements, such as the doors and roof, remain familiar, and the load bay carries over largely unchanged. The overall dimensions, including wheelbase, also stay consistent with the previous model. The most notable styling difference lies at the front, where a new honeycomb-style grille—similar to that of the Corolla Cross—and sharper headlamps give the Hilux a bolder, more modern expression.
The 9th-generation Toyota Hilux blends proven durability with fresh design and comfort upgrades, reaffirming its status as South Africa’s enduring automotive icon.
