Mark Parton's Vision for a Unified Canberra Liberals

UPDATE, 3:40 PM: Mark Parton, the newly elected leader of the Canberra Liberals, along with his deputy Deborah Morris, pledged to unify the party ahead of the 2028 election.

Commitment to Unity

Addressing the media, Parton expressed frustration with ongoing internal party disputes. He emphasized the disconnect between party conflict and public concerns in the suburbs.

“I’m absolutely sick to death of having conversations about internal party matters because I can tell you that people out in the suburbs are not having those conversations.”

He stated his goal was to unite the party’s nine parliamentary members for a common cause.

“I am here, along with Deborah Morris, to get nine parliamentary members on the same train heading forward so that we can take on the government in 2028.”

Addressing Party Divisions

Parton acknowledged past divisions within the party but noted that resignations by former leaders Leanne Castley and Jeremy Hanson created an opportunity for renewal.

Offering his perspective on the party’s conflicts, he pointed out that the split was not ideological but rather about holding onto past grievances.

“I think in recent months my party’s been divided by a line that separates people who hang on to shit and people who leave shit behind, and it is time to leave shit behind.”

Leadership Qualities

Recognized as the party’s best media performer, Mark Parton has long been seen as a potential leader but had either lacked sufficient support or chosen not to pursue the role until now.

Mark Parton's leadership signals a fresh start focused on unity and future electoral success.
