After countless hours of training, the big day has arrived for Bolton native Sara Cox as she ties her sneakers and begins an extraordinary challenge to support Children in Need.
The BBC Radio 2 presenter from Little Lever will cover 135 miles on foot across four counties, running the equivalent of five marathons in five days. The feat, called the Great Northern Marathon Challenge, begins in Kielder Forest and ends in Pudsey, Leeds.
"Welcome to the calm before the storm. I’m watching Countryfile in Northumberland, having a lovely time. Tomorrow I’ll start my epic Great Northern Marathon Challenge – 135 miles – from Kielder Forest all the way to Pudsey in Leeds. Thanks for all your messages on Instagram, they’ve given me such a boost."
Posting to her 545,000 Instagram followers, Sara shared her excitement and gratitude for the messages of encouragement. She also mentioned joining Scott Mills on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show before setting off at 8:15 a.m.
"I’ll be up super early, my knees will be knocking, but I’m going to give it as much welly as I can despite having a slight lurgy. Let’s do this and raise loads of money for Children in Need."
Sara follows in the footsteps of fellow Boltonians and Radio 2 colleagues Paddy McGuinness and Vernon Kay, both of whom completed impressive fundraising challenges in recent years, raising millions for the same cause.
