Moderate Liberal assumes leadership after party turmoil

Moderate Liberal Takes Helm After Party Upheaval

A moderate figure has stepped in to lead one of the Liberal Party's weakest branches following the abrupt resignation of its two top members. Mark Parton has assumed leadership of the Canberra Liberals after Leanne Castley and her deputy, Jeremy Hanson, resigned on Monday. Party officials said they believe this change offers the best chance to position the Liberals for success in the 2028 election.

Castley had previously ousted former Liberal leader Elizabeth Lee after the party's defeat in the 2024 election held in October. She described the recent changes as part of a genuine renewal effort for the team.

“In the spirit of ensuring a genuine fresh start for the new team, we will not be commenting publicly on the circumstances that have led to this decision,” Leanne Castley said in a statement.

The Canberra Liberals have spent over twenty years outside government and are expected to remain in opposition for 27 years by the next election in 2028. Deborah Morris, known for her conservative leanings, has been appointed as deputy.

“It’s vital that we continue to strengthen cohesion within our party,” Mark Parton stated. “By encouraging open dialogue, valuing diverse perspectives, and finding common ground, we can reinforce our shared purpose.”

The Canberra Liberals continue to face criticism that their platform remains too conservative for the progressive electorate of the ACT, where they currently hold no federal representation.
