EDMONTON — Nathan MacKinnon scored twice and assisted on two more as the Colorado Avalanche overwhelmed the Edmonton Oilers 9-1 on Saturday. The Western Conference leaders showcased their firepower early and often in a decisive win.
Just over a minute after MacKinnon opened the scoring at 6:31 in the first period, Cale Makar fired a powerful wrist shot past Skinner for his sixth goal of the season, bringing his total to 20 points. Makar also maintained his streak of recording at least one point in nine straight road games this season.
“MacKinnon assisted on Colorado’s first goal, picking up the 700th even-strength point of his career, joining Joe Sakic as the only other player in franchise history to reach that mark.”
“Mattias Ekholm leads all active Oilers in career games (43) against Colorado.”
The Oilers’ Connor McDavid scored their lone goal in the loss, but the team struggled to gain traction throughout the game.
Author’s summary: The Avalanche delivered a commanding performance led by MacKinnon’s multi-point game, solidifying their place atop the Western Conference while the Oilers faltered in a tough home defeat.
