A Turkish Air Force C-130 Hercules transport aircraft crashed in Georgia, resulting in the deaths of 20 soldiers. This marks the deadliest military air disaster for Turkey since 2020.
The plane, which took off from Azerbaijan and was heading to Turkey, went down in grassy terrain within Georgian territory. Nineteen bodies have been recovered, while search operations for one remaining victim continue.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan confirmed the recovery of the black box and 19 martyrs' remains.
He noted that a joint investigation between Turkish and Georgian authorities is underway to determine the cause of the crash.
Preliminary findings suggest that either fuel shortage or structural failure might have caused the aircraft to break apart mid-air. The black box will be key to clarifying the incident's sequence.
Lockheed Martin, which produced the C-130 Hercules, is assisting Turkish authorities in the probe. Analysts emphasize that Turkey’s aging fleet of C-130s needs urgent modernization.
The C-130 Hercules has served in various roles for decades across numerous air forces worldwide. Turkey’s reliance on these older variants highlights longstanding calls for an upgrade.
