Renowned British chef Clare Smyth will close her celebrated Sydney restaurant, Oncore, this summer after its lease expires. The fine-dining venue, perched on level 26 of Crown Sydney, has been known for its elegant seven-course tasting menu and the dish that made Smyth famous — a silky potato topped with roe.
Opened in 2021, Oncore quickly became a destination for special occasions, offering artful dishes and refined service inspired by Smyth’s London establishment, Core, which holds three Michelin stars.
“Opening Oncore in Sydney has been an incredible journey,” Smyth said in a statement. “I’m deeply proud of what we’ve achieved and grateful to the team whose talent and dedication brought our vision to life. It’s been a privilege to share our food with Australian diners and be part of Crown Sydney’s world-class offering.”
Oncore was Smyth’s first venture outside the United Kingdom, conceived as an “encore” to her acclaimed London restaurant. Speaking to Broadsheet at the time of opening, she noted the ties between Britain and Australia and her fondness for the country.
“Whilst geographically Australia is across the world from the UK, the relationship between the two is so close that it also feels like home to me,” Smyth said. “As I normally travel to Australia once or twice a year for events and to visit friends, it was the ideal location to open my second restaurant and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity when it came my way.”
Clare Smyth’s acclaimed Sydney restaurant Oncore, her only establishment outside the UK, will close this summer after four years of redefining fine dining at Crown Sydney.
