Metallica transformed Marvel Stadium into a hometown festivity by covering The Living End’s Prisoner of Society during their 2025 Australian tour, delivering a powerful set beloved by fans.
Continuing their tradition of honoring local classics at each Australian show, Metallica paid homage to Melbourne natives The Living End. Guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist/vocalist Rob Trujillo joined the performance, highlighting the band's connection to local music.
A subtle nod to INXS’ Don’t Change was also noticed at the start of the Melbourne cover.
It had been 12 years since Metallica last performed in Australia. When James Hetfield asked how many were attending their show for the first time, many hands rose, though the majority of the 40,000-strong Marvel Stadium crowd were devoted longtime fans.
"An image of a 1989 Festival Hall ticket flashed up on the big screens, a nod to Metallica’s first-ever Melbourne show on 4 May 1989."
Back then, Festival Hall held just over 5,000 people. This recent crowd was ten times larger — Metallica’s biggest single-night audience ever in Melbourne.
Metallica’s 2025 Australian shows celebrate local music legends and mark their largest Melbourne audience ever, reaffirming their enduring connection to Australian fans.
