New Earthquake Alert System Begins Operation in Eastern Canada
A new earthquake early-warning system has officially launched in eastern Ontario and Quebec, aiming to give residents a few seconds' notice before strong shaking begins. The system, developed through federal and provincial collaboration, uses a network of sensors to detect seismic activity in real time.
How the System Works
The sensors instantly measure initial ground motion and transmit data to a processing center, which determines whether an alert should be sent. Notifications are then pushed through mobile networks and broadcast systems to warn people in affected areas. The early alerts can provide time to take protective actions, such as seeking cover or stopping vehicles.
Importance of Early Warnings
Officials explain that even a short advance warning—sometimes only five to ten seconds—can significantly reduce injuries and infrastructure damage. Similar systems are already in use in British Columbia, where they have proven effective.
Federal and Provincial Collaboration
Natural Resources Canada led the project with support from local emergency management organizations in Ontario and Quebec. Installation of seismic sensors across the region has been underway for several years as part of a broader effort to enhance national disaster preparedness.
“These alerts give people precious seconds to protect themselves, and that can make all the difference,” said a spokesperson for Natural Resources Canada.
Future Expansion
Authorities plan to continue refining the technology and expand coverage to other seismic zones across Canada. Public education campaigns are also being developed to help residents understand how to respond when alerts are issued.
