Helmut Marko has apologised to Kimi Antonelli after his comments about the Mercedes rookie sparked backlash. Marko acknowledged that Antonelli did not deliberately let Lando Norris through during their late-race battle in the Qatar Grand Prix.
"Kimi did not intentionally let Norris pass," Marko admitted, correcting his earlier statement that implied a lack of awareness or intent.
The initial remarks by Marko were seen as dismissive and provoked criticism against Antonelli from some fans.
During the closing laps in Qatar, Antonelli and Norris were engaged in a competitive duel. Marko had suggested that Antonelli’s actions were 'brainless', which led to many accusing the young driver unjustly.
Following the backlash, Marko retracted his comments and publicly apologised to Antonelli, recognising the rookie’s efforts and skills.
Helmut Marko’s apology highlights the importance of thoughtful commentary in sport to avoid unfair criticism of young talent.
