A report submitted to Derry City and Strabane District Council has revealed that asbestos was identified in the former Convent of Mercy on Pump Street nine years ago.
The "Refurbishment / Demolition Asbestos Survey" was completed on September 28, 2016, and stated that
"Urgent remedial action is required to make safe asbestos identified on this site."
The building, which is a Grade BI listed property, partially collapsed on October 5, resulting in the closure of Pump Street to vehicular access.
An application for Listed Building Consent has been submitted to the council for the "partial controlled demolition of [the] unsafe structure".
