A guest speaker at the 25th annual Domestic Abuse Awareness Luncheon in Alexandria shared her story of survival and becoming a criminal prosecutor.
The event, presented by UCAN (United Communities Advocating Non-Violence), featured Rhonda Martinson, a survivor of domestic violence who later became a prosecutor in Wisconsin.
Martinson's background is notable, as she didn't grow up in an abusive home. Her father was a sheriff's investigator and her mother was a teacher.
"I know it sounds foolish, but as I said, I was a shy girl very impressed with the whole situation,"
she said, recalling how she met her husband, a military veteran, at a bar when she was 18 and married him a few months later.
A coordinated community response makes a difference, according to Martinson.
