Government Completes Assessment of Sydney-Newcastle High-Speed Rail Business Case

The federal government has completed the assessment of the business case for the Sydney-Newcastle High-Speed Rail project.

The project's cost for Stage 1 (Sydney to Newcastle) is estimated to be between $30 billion to $40 billion by industry experts.

"I don't want to mislead the Senate or the estimates hearing, and the range and the cost is dependent on the government's decision,"
said High Speed Rail Authority chief executive Tim Parker.

Infrastructure Australia has been reviewing the business case since December, and the government has confirmed its commitment to progressing the project.
