Inclusion starts with… knowing the difference

Inclusion in the Construction Industry

Chris Hayward, CEO, emphasizes the importance of inclusion in the culture of NMBS.

Diversity and inclusion are often used together, but they have distinct meanings. Diversity refers to representation, or "who is in the room," while inclusion is about belonging, or "who feels welcome, valued and able to thrive in that room."

Diversity is about representation, about who is in the room. Inclusion is about belonging, about who feels welcome, valued and able to thrive in that room.

In the construction industry, this distinction is crucial. To address skills shortages, the industry must become more diverse, drawing talent from a wider range of groups. However, this can only be achieved by building a more inclusive culture.

Author's summary: Inclusion is key to a diverse workforce.
