The WNBA, established in 1997, has come a long way since its inception. Initially comprising eight teams, it now boasts 13 active teams and has announced expansion plans to five new cities.

In 2024, the league set an all-time viewership record, marking its most-watched season in 21 years. Furthermore, in-person attendance surged by 48% from the 2023 season, achieving the highest total attendance in 22 years.

The NBA Board of Governors approved the concept of a women’s-only league in 1996, paving the way for the WNBA's launch on June 21, 1997.
