Davinder Singh, the lawyer for ex-oil tycoon OK Lim, argued that the criminal trial judge erred in convicting Lim of cheating charges during a High Court hearing on October 24.
Lim, the 83-year-old founder of Hin Leong, had earlier been sentenced to 17 years and six months' jail on three charges of cheating and forgery, following a 62-day criminal trial.
The case has been hailed as “one of the most serious cases of trade financing fraud” in Singapore.
Lim's lawyers are appealing the conviction and sentences, seeking a reduced sentence of seven years' jail, citing his age and the fact that a 20-year sentence would be akin to a life sentence.
