A National Disgrace: Animals Used in British Laboratories

We are shocked and appalled by the annual report on animal use in scientific procedures in 2024, revealing the level of suffering and reasons behind it.

The report shows that 11,992 LD50 procedures were conducted, which involves giving animals increasing doses of a substance until half of them die to determine its lethal dose.

The LD50 test is cruel and outdated, having been devised in 1927, and is unreliable.

Prior to the 2024 General Election, the Labour party manifesto pledged to

“…partner with scientists, industry, and civil society as we work towards the phasing out of animal testing”
.

A government strategy to honour this promise is expected to be published soon.

Author's summary: Animal testing in British labs sparks outrage.
