Owens: Stones and change

Recently, I visited Albany, New York, for a brief trip over the weekend. I wandered without a plan to explore the city. I walked along State Street, Albany's original "Main Street" and one of the two oldest streets in the city.

I came to the end of State Street and found myself in the Empire State Plaza, where multiple government buildings are located. One of those buildings is the New York State Capitol, where the state legislature gathers.

The New York State Capitol was completed in 1899 at a cost of $25 million, approximately $794 million in today's currency, making it the most expensive government building of its time. The project began in 1867 and took 32 years to complete, utilizing three architectural teams.
